Police bodycams can be a huge assistance on the job, but every so often they also capture something kind of hilarious. Honestly, if there wasn’t video footage as proof, you would never believe this attack on the police… by a squirrel! New York’s Brockport Police posted the video on Facebook, noting that two officers were called to assist with a theft. Well, a squirrel had broken into a house and was stealing the cookies in the kitchen, that is.
Officers Sime and Dawson are seen entering the kitchen and joking about whether the squirrel had turned on the loud music. You know, a little entertainment while he was dining?
Next thing you know, the squirrel leaps from the ceiling to the ground and then jumps to the kitchen table and races towards one of the men. You can definitely see how nimble these animals are. The squirrel hits the officer, which results in him shouting. His partner stands nearby, completely cracking up over the attack.
The squirrel continued to bound about the room while the police left. They were able to capture the creature, however, as the Facebook post noted:
“On December 29th, 2017 Brockport Police were called to a residence for a squirrel that had broken into the house, reportedly eating cookies in the kitchen. Officers Sime and Dawson arrived on scene but were not at all expecting the warm welcome they would receive from the squirrel. The squirrel was ultimately captured by officers and released without injury. The homeowner was very relieved that their uninvited guest was set free. Brockport Police will always go the extra mile to help their residents.”
We’d say they definitely went above and beyond the call of duty in this instance.
Many people weighed in with comments on the Facebook video post, with notes such as: “Great job guys,” “A salute to Brockport police! Great job and a wonderful ending,” and “If that’s the worst thing to happen in Brockport for the day you guys are doing a pretty good job.”
Another commenter noted: “Poor little thing was probably cold and hungry and scared to death. This weather has been brutal on wildlife too. Good work Brockport Police Dept.”
Others were tickled by the light-hearted post, with one person writing: “This is by far the best story yet posted by Brockport PD yet…great job I must say also, demonstrating the amazing community policing Brockport PD does.” Another commenter noted: “Thanks for posting!! It shows the police going above and beyond, but most of all their sense of humor!!”
Some commenters noted that it could have been worse, with one writing: “Thank goodness it wasn’t a RED squirrel; those officers would’ve needed to call in backup” and another adding: “Squirrels are very destructive in a house.”
Another person shared their personal experience, writing: “Last year we had red squirrels in the garage overhead and they got into the living room wall. I could hear them at night! Eventually trapped them and relocated! It was interesting!”
