We’ve all heard the saying, “A couple that plays together, stays together.” This saying proves true when it comes to activities, household tasks, and major accomplishments. A couple in their 70s is showing just how far you can get when you pair up and tackle a major goal. For them, the goal was to lose 400 pounds together. “I was praying, and the Lord spoke to me, and said, ‘Go find Donnie and ask him to go to Weight Watchers with you,’” said North Carolina resident Becky Hensley, who is calling her path a divine inspiration.
The couple committed to completing the healthy journey together and from that point on, doors of health opened up for them. And soon they were doing activities that come easy for some but has always been a challenge for them. After they lost the weight they were able to take part in activities together like walking hand in hand and even tying their shoes.
Their lives instantly became more active as they joined together and went to the gym and committed to healthier eating habits.
The story of Donnie and Becky is one that shows true perseverance and possibilities when you commit to something and dedicate your life to it. The Weaverville, North Carolina residents were at an age when most couples start to slow down and give into old habits, but they decided to pick up and think about the “now,” instead of dwelling on their past choices. Not to mention the fact that at the age of 70, their bodies were slowing down, but they picked up and moved ahead, proving to everyone that age doesn’t matter when it comes to getting a fresh start in life.
Now, Donnie and Becky can enjoy the rest of their lives taking part in activities that they have never dreamed about before. Instead of struggling to walk, they now can easily get up and get moving, making everything else in their lives easier. These two can be an inspiration for couples who are half their age. It doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s fairly easy to fall into the prison of unhealthy habits and it’s so difficult to get out of these habits, however; once you get the momentum, it’s easy to keep going and moving forward checking off little goals along the way.
Obesity is an epidemic in the United States and the statistics are shocking. Obesity rates exceed 35% in five states, 30% in 25 states, and 25% in 46 states. The state that has the highest obesity rate is West Virginia with 37.7% of residents falling within obesity lines and Colorado has 22.3% serving as the state with the lowest rate of obesity.
Southern states have proven to have the highest obesity rates with numbers that reach 35% of residents in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama being obese. The cause of obesity prevalence in these states is unknown, however; the food choices tend to be more centered around fatty and fried options. Several diseases stem from obesity, which in turn leads to early death rates. It is a devastating cycle.
